..and this is the site now from the same position

The bases for the concrete pillars on the Horrabridge side.

The temporary bridge across the river.

A reminder of how the bridge will look when it is finished at the begining of next year.

Wednesday 8th June Hexworthy

Well just three of us tonight - where has everone gone?  A bright clear evening but with a very cold wind. We set off towards Deep Swincombe and followed just below the dry leat.

Towards Bellever Tor and Laughter Tor..

Hamel Down in the far distance..

Into Deep Swincombe we went - but it is not actually that deep!

Now this has got to be one of the most crooked wall lines on the moor.

From the top of Deep Swincombe and off to the cross on the top of Ter Hill.  Very rough ground and hard going under foot

I spy humans - maybe they have some food for us!

Then into Skir Gut for a break before going on to The Henroost and Hooten Wheals mining complex.

Slowly darkness descends as we take the main track back down to Hexworthy....

Sharp Tor in the middle with Rippon Tor in the distance

........and into the very quiet Forest Inn with the dodgy beer but they got it right in the end.

On the walk just Stella and Mike

Tuesday 7th June The South West Coast Path from South Milton to Salcombe

Well not Dartmoor but it is in the background!

The Team ready at the car park by Thurlestone Rock with the forecast of very heavy and frequent showers.

Along the path towards Hope Cove with Bolt Tail in the backgroud

Descending into Hope Cove

Looking back to Hope Cove

Here you can just see Ugborough Beacon and Western Beacon on the south of Dartmoor - last week were up there looking out here..

Towards Bolberry Down

Then Soar Mill Cove at the bottom for lunch....

.... no white wine but a very beautiful beach

Then the long haul back up towards The Warren

Sharp Tor - just before here the showers finally caught up with us but it was only one and not very heavy - so we were lucky.  Just very bright sunshine and a cooling breeze - perfect walking conditions.

Finally Salcombe comes into view

Just one minor problem - we had to wait an hour for a taxi to get us back to the cars.

Walking today Bud, Chris, Roger, Terry, Rosemary, Brian and Linda

Tuesday 31st May Ugborough Beacon

First the long and winding road and then the very, very narrow road and eventually you get to Harford Moor Gate. Just 4 of us today and so we set of past the reservoir and up to the old tramway.

Along this for a short while and then up and across to Western Beacon with fantastic views across Ivybridge..

...and then towards Plymouth.

Next back to the top of Butterton Hill (with Three Barrows and Sharp Tor in the background)...

..and then over to Crebers Rock

Western Beacon from Ugbourough Beacon

From here we could see the sea by Torbay and just make out a large ship.

East towards Brent Hill - above South Brent

From here we headed to Spurrell's Crosss to rejoin the tramway to take
us to Three Barrows for lunch.

From Three Barrows you could see Rippon Tor in the far distance.

After lunch on to the pool next to Leftlake Mires

To start the return trip.  Just along the track we came upon a heard of cows.  It soon became clear that they didn't like Huxley and he didn't like them!  All we wanted to do was get past but this was their territory and they were not going to give it up easily.

Eventually after much complaining and moo..ing they moved off to the right to let us past.  We continued back to the cars and they continued moo..ing

The view up the Erme valley

Walking today Terry, Rosemary and Linda.

Wednesday 25th May Burrator

So instead of thrashing from tor to tor a more informed walk around the reservoir to see the things you might not see.

From the dam down to the River Meavy back up the other side through the bluebell woods (now well past their best) to see Burrator Tor

With this part in the field...

..and this part in the woods

Then down to the road and the reservoir and this one is well down as well - so South West Water must have lots of water somewhere else!

On to a disused farm..

...with an apple crusher and granite troughs nearby
and a place for extracting the grain using wind.

We followed a road normally covered by water to the weir at the end of the reservoir and by now it was raining. Around the north of the reservoir and back once more fairy land...

Through the woods again to an old road called Wembly Way.  This used to go through the reservoir but is now a place where various items are kept from places now flooded by the water.

And then on to the Royal Oak.  Walking tonight John, Mike, Raz, Tom, David, Keith, Sue, Pete and Anne
