Wednesday morning 27th November Pew Tor

Much more gloomy this morning with a heavy layer of cloud.

Eleven of us set off to the little quarry near Pew Tor - Terry pointed out he goldfish that live in the water here.

A morning for finding things. Firstly this golf ball just sitting on top of a rock - presumably someone had been practising their golf strokes up here...
...then a metal plug left in this granite boulder. The purpose here would have been to split the boulder along the line where the weeds are growing but this was abandoned and the plug left in the rock and it has probably been here for more  than a hundred years!

On to Pew Tor and of course some always have to get on top.

The cloud rolled in below us...

...and we were engulfed by the time we had reached this little dewpond.

But, by the time we had reached Heckwood Tor, where this gorse bush was coming into bloom, the cloud had dispersed again.

Down past Vixen Tor.

Where we found a dog collar and...
 ...shortly after a horse whip.

Next into the disused quarry at Merrivale now filled with water....

...and the derelict buildings left behind...

...the quarry ceased excavating and working its own granite in the 1970's but continued to process imported stone until the 1990's when it closed.

Jon helps Terry across the busy main road - or was it the other way round?

On to the ford below Barn Hill...

...and the old smithy nearby.

Following the leat to Windy Post and the Bullseye Stone.

Next the Logan stone by Feather Tor - and this one really rocks.

Followed by an excellent lunch in the London Inn with Jon, John, Pete, Cath, Ian, Jane, Terry, Peter, Anne and David.

Sunday 13th October Staple Tor

A gloomy day, strange lighting and rain forecast for later.  A local walk today starting below Pew Tor...

...first up to the quarry...

...then around to Little Pew Tor and a there was  little bit of sunshine on North Hessary Tor.

I headed over to the right hand side of Pew Tor.

Below to my right there was sunshine lighting up King Tor....

...and also on Barn Hill Rocks ahead.

I went down to the track which goes around Heckwood Tor.  More sunshine here and I like the contrast with Great Mis Tor in the background.

Over below Swell Tor the sun was still there - but that was the end of it!

I followed the track around Heckwood Tor.  In the centre is a perfectly crafted slab of granite which was never used.

Ahead Vixen Tor....

To which the public are no longer allowed - all the more naff is the graffiti the land owner has painted on the granite wall which says 'no public access'

On to the disused quarry at Merrivale.

Then up to Great Staple Tor - in the foreground is the track used to remove the granite from the hill.

The ridge line along to Middle Staple Tor...

...and Roos Tor the other way.

Across to Brent Tor

Down to the dewpond and up to..

Cox Tor.

Looking back to Roos Tor, Great Mis Tor and Great Staple Tor.

The route back to Pew Tor and Pork Hill car park below - the ferns have all died off.

Windy Post and the Bullseye stone.

Pew Tor Ahead.

Looking down to the start.

I was lucky a few minutes after finishing the rain came down - in abundance.

Friday 17th May Horrabridge

The usual Tuesday walk was moved to Friday this week - just as well because on Tuesday it was heavy rain and today we had glorious sunshine.  Starting from The London Inn in Horrabridge and Roger had bright new rucksack - a lovely shade of very bright fuchsia pink!
Up the green lane which goes from the old school.
The bluebells are out at last.

On to Plaster Down heading towards...

...Pew Tor

Stopping at the old quarry so that Murphy...

...could have a good swim. Round and round he went and he didn't want to leave!

Then up to the top...

...by Little Pew Tor and on...

...to Pew Tor

Down to the track and on...

...to Sampford Spiney...

...where the Alpacas live.

Then back along the footpath through the eventing field...

...and past some moody cows - they didn't like the dogs!

With a few stiles on the way.

Back to Horrabridge....

...and the London Inn for a super fish and chip lunch using the winnings from our many quiz nights.

On the walk Rosemary, Terry, Chris, Roger, and Paul and in the pub Bud, Chris and Linda.
