Afternoon walk near Bovey Tracey

Ever tried driving across dartmoor at this time of the year. Coaches trying to pass camper vans in narrow lanes.  Drivers weaving around,  going 20mph to admire the view and stopping without notice - why don't the park, go for a walk, get a much better view and not cause any danger to anyone else?.   Well getting anywhere takes for ever and it took me ages to get to the start for some more 'off moor' tors.

First was a gentle walk along a green lane..

...and through a gate to find...

...Bottor Rock (280). A large tor covered in trees and vegetation.

Next back to the start and down another lane to find this friendly horse waiting to greet me as I went into his field.

On a bit further and a style with a very unusual sign - not seen this one before but there are lots of place on Dartmoor where this could apply.

This was the view from the top of the style across to Haytor Rocks and Rippon Tor.

Not very far in the woods was Shaptor Rock (281) - fortunately I didn't find and steep drops.

Back to the start again and a short drive down a very narrow lane..

...over this footbridge...

...and then up a steep path to...

Great Rock (282)

Another short drive. Then a walk up farm track and through a couple of fields to Bullaton Rock (283) which is hidden in the trees on the left.

A bit further along the road, through an open gate and down this track was...

Elsford Rock (284) - this was a close as I could get.

Then back home and another struggle with the day trippers.

Evening Walk from Four Winds

A kite flying high above the top of Great Mis Tor.

Up the hill we went to Hollow Tor with the mast of  North Hessary Tor behind.

From Hollow Tor towards Great Mis Tor...

...and on to North Hessary Tor as the moon comes out. But, it's not yet a gibbous moon!

Over some rough ground to the old railway line as it gets darker.

Then across to Swell Tor and around to King Tor before going down to the stream and coming up through the wet bit to the cars.

Much discussion all evening and in the pub about whether we should continue walking during the evening over the winter period.  Well it seems that after a period of consultation - and probably a bit of compromise - we will know the answer!

With Tom, Charles, Jon, John, Tony and Anne.
