Tuesday 12th February Four Winds

A dull cold day and just a touch of frost underfoot.  We set off from Four Winds and up to Hollow Tor.

The view across to Great Mis Tor.

The dominating mast next...

...North Hessary Tor

Then down past Princetown to...

...the railway line.

We cut over to Swelltor Quarry....

...and one of the large holes left behind.

The view across to Foggintor Quarry.

King Tor was our next stop.

Then down to cross the stream and up to the large standing stone...

...and over to the stone row before returning to the cars.

Lunch was in the Darmoor Inn which was OK with Amber, Linda and Charlie.

Wednesday 6th February Four Winds

A bitterly cold wind and a touch of frost underfoot as we set off from Four Winds - first to the double Stone Row and then to the nearby Stone Circle.  In the centre of the circle was a stick with roses attached and there was a rose on each stone making up the circle - a touch of magic or pagan rights perhaps?   Presumably, the roses had been left behind so that others passing would know they had been here.  Next across to King's Tor and then down to the railway line before going around Foggintor Quarry.  Then up to North Hessary Tor - only 1.5k but it seemed longer in the strong wind.  We returned past Hollow Tor before returning to the cars and on to The Whitchurch Inn.  With Keith, Liz, Peter, Charles Mike and Jon.

Tuesday 5th February Combshead Tor

We started at the lane which leads up to Sheeps Tor just behind the village of Sheepstor.

A light dusting of snow on the higher moor.

Past a floral tribute left on Maiden Tor - a favourite place for someone on a beautiful tor overlooking Burrator Reservoir

Across to Leather Tor and Sharpitor

Around the lower levels of Sheeps Tor with time for some to look at the Piskies Cave...

...and the view from the top with the church in Sheepstor just visible.

A light dusting of snow transforming the landscape for a few hours, leaving this magical winter wonderland for us to wonder at and walk across!

From Sheeps Tor with Gutter Tor below and Hen Tor further away...

...Combshead Tor in the opposite direction...

...and Sharpitor, Leather Tor and Great Mis Tor.

Along the top of Sheeps Tor and then across to Deancombe.

 Looking back to Sheeps Tor.

Through Deancombe...

...and up again...

...to the top of Combshead Tor.

As we moved off towards Down Tor in the sunshine we could see the next wave of hail and sleet coming towards us.

Then down to Middleworth Tor and Norsworthy Bridge...

...and on the Royal Oak at Meavy with Rosemary, Terry, Amber, Colin, Brian, Bill, Charlie and Linda

Friday 1st February Piskies House Sheeps Tor

I have tried to find this before and failed so after a little research I was better prepared.  The cave is at the bottom of the larger square rock in the middle of the clitter and in the centre of this photograph.

What I didn't expect was to find a Piskie coming out!

The view across the moor from the entrance to the cave....

...and the zoomed in view to Plymouth Sound from the top of Sheeps Tor with the breakwater and ferris wheel clearly visible

Wednesday evening 30th January Lowery Cross

Mud, slippery mud nearly everywhere! Starting from Lowery Cross we went down through the forest to the Devonport Leat and followed this to where it comes out of the forest.  Then up between Sharpitor and Leather Tor and across to Leather Tor where we took our break.  Almost to the top of Peek Hill, then down through Peekhill Planatation and back to the cars just as the moon was coming up.  On to the Royal Oak at Meavy with Sue, Keith, Stella, Mike and Pete.

Wednesday morning 30th January Assycombe Hill

A much better day. Strong winds, but no rain and just a hint of sunshine.  Starting from the little car park by Stats Bridge.

Up to the old mine working just behind the Warren House Inn.

The view towards Hamel Down...

...and Soussons Down.

On to the Cairn on Water Hill before going over to....

....the D stone on the edge of Fernworthy Forest....

...and into the forest.

Wandering about along this track and then that track until....

...we came to the Assycombe hut circles...
...and next to it something a little newer.

Then through the trees and out in the middle of the forest by the double stone row where a man was hard a work strimming the grass around the stones....

...very tidy job!

Out and back into the wind on the moor..

...and back to the cars.

Lunch in the Warren House Inn, with Jon, John, Jim, Ian, Bill and Terry
