Tuesday 18th June Burrator Woods

An earlier start and a shorter walk today so that we could meet him in the pub.  Warm and humid.   Starting from Lowery Cross we went down through the woods.

Heavy overnight rain.

Past the potato cave...

 ...to Leather Tor Bridge.

Then to follow the River Meavy...

...along the east bank and no one could remember walking on this bit of the moor before.

To the aqueduct.  Strange that I was only here last week following a different route.

Then back following the leat....

...past the  miniature Indian's head sculpture embedded in the wall of the leat.

Around the corner of the woods and up to...

...the gap between Leather Tor and Sharpitor.

Burrator reservoir below.

Over Peak Hill...

...and back through the woods.

On to the Walkhampton Inn to wait for them to open.  And we got there before he did!

With Brian, Terry and Rosemary and Bud and Brian in the pub.

Tuesday 5th February Combshead Tor

We started at the lane which leads up to Sheeps Tor just behind the village of Sheepstor.

A light dusting of snow on the higher moor.

Past a floral tribute left on Maiden Tor - a favourite place for someone on a beautiful tor overlooking Burrator Reservoir

Across to Leather Tor and Sharpitor

Around the lower levels of Sheeps Tor with time for some to look at the Piskies Cave...

...and the view from the top with the church in Sheepstor just visible.

A light dusting of snow transforming the landscape for a few hours, leaving this magical winter wonderland for us to wonder at and walk across!

From Sheeps Tor with Gutter Tor below and Hen Tor further away...

...Combshead Tor in the opposite direction...

...and Sharpitor, Leather Tor and Great Mis Tor.

Along the top of Sheeps Tor and then across to Deancombe.

 Looking back to Sheeps Tor.

Through Deancombe...

...and up again...

...to the top of Combshead Tor.

As we moved off towards Down Tor in the sunshine we could see the next wave of hail and sleet coming towards us.

Then down to Middleworth Tor and Norsworthy Bridge...

...and on the Royal Oak at Meavy with Rosemary, Terry, Amber, Colin, Brian, Bill, Charlie and Linda

Monday 2nd January 2012 Cramber Tor

I have bought 'The A to Z of Dartmoor Tors'  by Terry Bound.  In this he lists all of the tors on Dartmoor (just over 300) and I aim to visit them all during 2012. The weather has been very wet for the last few days so it was good to get a forecast with just showers and sunshine and a good opportunity to start.

First one that can viewed from home.  So starting from Leedon Tor car park, around Sharpitor and up to Peek Hill (1)

Next down to the lovely little tor overlooking Burrator - Lowery Tor (2).  On the current OS maps this tor does not have a name.  Terry Bound is using the name which was shown in Crossing's  book  first published in 1912.

Back along the ridge to Sharpitor (3).....

...and across to Leather Tor (4)

Looking across to Down Tor and Combshead Tor and down to the forest.

Looking back up to Leather Tor....

...through the trees to the  Devonport Leat.

...and along the leat to the aqueduct.

Following the leat for a while there appeared a pile of square cut granite blocks which I can only assume were brought here either to build or repair the leat and then not required.

Across to Crazy Well Pool originally dug out for mining purposes and subject to a variety of superstitions.

Then over to the Crazy Well Cross nearby marking an old monastic route.

Next back across the leat and up to Cramber Pool which is at the end of a long girt. This is much smaller than Crazy Well Pool and more secluded.

Down to Cramber Tor (5)...

...then Hart Tor (6) at the head of the old rifle range...

 ..and Black Tor (7).

Finally down and across the main road through a particularly heavy shower and up to Leedon Tor (8)
