Tuesday 21st May Hound Tor

To Hound Tor car park on the other side of the moor. This is often an 'honeypot' and so it was this morning with a large group of walkers getting ready.  There was a heavy mist and as we walked up the hill as Hound Tor emerged.

Down the track beside Greator Rocks...

...and through the Medieval Village...

...before going down the steeper slope to the clapper bridge over Becka Brook.

Out of the woods and we followed the path north towards Leighon and then came back...

...due south  up Black Hill with Easdon Tor on the left and Manadon on the right.

By now the mist had gone and we had clear views towards Hunter's Tor.

On to the cairn on top of Black Hill.
In the distance was Haytor Rocks - looking a bit sinister in this zoomed in photo.

Along the ridge to Smallacombe Rocks and the large group of walkers had made it up here.

Holwell Tor quarry in the distance.

We headed towards Haytor and then followed the granite tramway for a while.

Haytor was on our left but we didn't go there today.

We went down around Holwell Tor and out of the wind for our picnic.  It was Rosemary's birthday and to celebrate she provided some nice cookies!

Next back down the valley...

...to re-cross the Becka Brook at this delightful spot.

Up again through the bluebells.

Looking back to Holwell Tor...

...and the ridge line we had walked earlier.

On to the eventing field at Holwell Lawn.

Finally back over Hound Tor.

With Rosemary, Terry, Linda and Charlie.

Tuesday 8th May Haytor Rocks

Lots of tors today and all close together.  The weather forecast had not been good but in the event we had perfect walking weather, warm in the sunshine and cool in the shade.  No haze with clear views. Starting from Top Tor car park just up from Widdecombe.

Around the road before going up to Saddle Tor (149).

The gang on Saddle Tor

From here I mistakenly took the team over to Haytor Rocks which meant I had to go back to Emsworthy Rocks (150). With Haytor in the distance.

Haytor Rocks (151)

The rest had continued on to Holwell Tor (152) where I caught up with them...

...with spectacular views across to Greator Rocks and Hound Tor....

...down from here across the Haytor quarry tramway.

To Smallacombe Rocks (153) - looking back to Holwell Tor.

A very short walk to Hole Rock (154) and then...

...Leighon Tor (155)

Looking back to Smallacombe Rocks

Down to the bottom of the valley and over this little bridge.  The bit after this is the worst part of the walk - very steep up the other side of the valley and back to the open moor...

...and we stopped for our picnic lunch with Greator Rocks (156) in view...

...around to the other side of Greator Rocks

Looking across to Haytor with Holwell Tor in the foreground.

Through the bluebell fields, but they were very disappointing compared to last year.

Looking across to Holwell Rocks (157) - just random piles of boulders.

Then over to Honeybag Tor (158)...

...from Honeybag Tor to Easdon Tor

...and in the distance Chinkwell Tor (159) our next stop.

Just below Chinkwell Tor is Sharp Tor (160)...

...below that is Bell Tor (161)...

...and down again to Bonehill Rocks (162)

The view over Widdecombe in the Moor.

Bonehill Rocks from the other side.

With Terry, Rosemary, Charlie, Carol, Roger and Linda.

So 14 tors today - all in an 8 mile walk.  The total number of tor listed in the book is just over 300 so today gets me just past the halfway point.

Thursday 29th December Chinkwell Tor

The weather forecast was wrong.  It was meant to be blustery showers and sunny periods but, for this family walk, we actually got high winds almost continuous rain and no sun. So off we went from Top Tor car park along the ridge towards Chinkwell Tor

First past Bonehill Rocks...

...and then Bell Tor

With a little deviation to find Sharp Tor

Looking back at Bell Tor...

...and on to Chinkwell Tor

Looking across to Honeybag Tor.

Back down to the Hound Tor Road  to find one of the bits of Holwell Rocks...

... and on to Hound Tor.

Down past Greator Rock.

With Haytor and  Holwell Tor in the distance.

Down to Becca Brook and then the slog up to Smallcombe Rocks

Across the tramway to the main Haytor Quarry.

Then back to the second car at Haytor Vale before adjourning to the Widecombe Inn for some refreshment
