Tuesday 2nd June Hamel Down

I don't know what happened but none of the photos I took before lunch were on the memory card.  I only have those I took after we came out of the pub! Maybe it is my unfamiliarity with the little waterproof camera.

A day of two halves.  For the first part of the walk we had very strong winds, low cloud and some rain.  Starting from the car park just below Grimspound we headed up through Grimspound. After wandering around a bit we eventually arrived at the memorial to the crashed RAF bomber. From here we took a low route on the east side of Hamel Down - past Blue Jug and around to Wooder Goyle Rocks before heading down to Widdecombe for lunch.

On leaving the pub it was much brighter and whilst the wind was still strong the cloud was lifting.













We headed back up to Hamel Down...

...with this view of Chinkwell Tor and Honeybag Tor - we had been much closer to it in the morning but it wasn't visible.

Near Stoneslade Tor Jon found this tiny cross embeded in a rock.  It is about 2 inches high and appears to be a memorial to someone who died in 1990 - what a wonderful thing to do!

Up to Hameldown Beacon and now clear views everywhere.

From Two Barrows we headed off to find another World War Two crash site.  All that is left is a memorial cross and there remains a little bit of aluminuim. Even after all these years there is nothing growing at the point of impact

Next over to Hamel Down Cross - the right arm of the cross appears to have been lost some time ago.

Then on to Hamel Down Tor.

Over to the west edge to look across to the bluebells growing in the old field system below.

Finally back down around the edge of Grimspound.
